Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital. It’s well known for its love of bicycles, canal system, and narrow houses with gabled facades. The city is below sea level so it was originally built on wooden poles, but they’ve since been replaced with concrete. Amsterdam has more bridges than Venice Italy and is also home to some 2,500 houseboats where residents live in the canals; some are available for some term rentals by tourists. Coffee shops in Amsterdam don’t sell coffee. There are surely a lot of great coffee houses in the city but never ask for a coffee shop because it’s a term used for places that sell weed. Its Museum District houses the Van Gogh Museum, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, and modern art at the Stedelijk.
