You don’t have to travel the way to Europe to find centuries-old and beautiful churches. The churches in Iceland date back to the early 1600s. The oldest known church is Grafarkirkja in northern Iceland. It is the oldest Christian church in Iceland and one of the very few churches to feature any type of ornamentation. Like Grafarkirkja, most of the churches in Iceland are small and feature a blanket of grass across the top for insulation.
