Buenos Aires is Argentina’s big, cosmopolitan capital city. Its center is the Plaza de Mayo, lined with stately 19th-century buildings including Casa Rosada, the iconic, balconied presidential palace. Other major attractions include Teatro Colón, a grand 1908 opera house with nearly 2,500 seats, and the modern MALBA museum, displaying Latin American art. Buenos Aires has a few interesting facts: the average temperature is 60 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, the port is the largest in all of South America, the President’s mansion is called Casa Rosada, or Pink House, because it’s literally a massive pink mansion with gorgeous architecture, and the city has the highest number of bookshops per person than any other city in the world.
