Flamingos

The African continent is home to 2477 species of bird, 57% of them are endemic (only found) in Africa. The lesser and greater flamingos of Walvis Bay Namibia arrive in droves after a 300-mile migration in search of algae and crustaceans and they’re quite the ‘clean up crew’. When all is said and done, this flock will have consumed some 180 tonnes of diatoms and algae each day. The deep pink color in the feathers comes from the food they eat, and it takes lesser (younger flamingos) up to three years to get their coloring.
