Kandy in Sri Lanka, formerly known as the city of Senkadagalapura, served as the last capital of the Sinhalese kingdom before falling to the British in 1815. The city is surrounded by forests, mountain ranges, a lake known as the Sea of Milk, and includes numerous colonial buildings. Kandy is known as a pilgrimage destination for the Temple of the Tooth Relic, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each August, an important 10-day religious celebration known as the Festival of the Tooth comes to life.
