The town of Maras is somewhere in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, 40 kilometers north of Cusco Peru. It’s famous for salt evaporation ponds, which have been in use since the Inca times. The ponds are found towards Urumba from the town center. Aside from the salt ponds, another must-see spot is the salt mines or tagged famously as the “salt pools” of Maras which are also found in the rural community of Pichingoto. While in the area, visit the Moray archaeological site and the Sanctuary of Tiobamba, an old colonial church that used adobe as its building material.
