New Individual-Based Travel Restrictions In The EU Started February 1

On February 1, 2022, the EU altered its travel restrictions in two big ways. Firstly, it is recommending a change in how member states manage travel restrictions, and altering the focus to the individual, away from the region of departure. Secondly, all member states are shortening the validity of Covid-19 vaccination certificates to 270 days (nine months) across the bloc. It comes as the WHO announced that Europe was moving towards the end of the emergency phase of managing Covid-19 because the Omicron variant is now widespread across the region. WHO’s Regional Director for Europe, Dr. Hans Henri P. Kluge explained that while the pandemic was not over, it might be heading into a sort of endgame.
